Leonardo DiCaprio has confessed he lost all sense of reality by the end of the filming of his new thriller Shutter Island.

The Titanic actor, who studied the mentally ill and watched several dark documentaries to perfect his performance as a tormented cop stuck in a hospital for the criminally insane, revealed he barely had any idea of time and place.

“My character was going through extreme emotional trauma and it”s hard for those types of things not to rub off on you,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

“Mark Ruffalo and I had to spout out three pages of dialogue. We had to talk through the wind machines, the rain machines and rats being thrown at us. But, just like the character, we had to persevere in finding out what was really going on in Shutter Island.

“A few weeks towards the end of filming, I started to forget where I was. We kept pushing this character further and further. It was day after day of re-enacting a traumatic event that was either a dream or reality for this guy. I remember saying to Marty, ”I have no idea where I am or what I”m doing”,” he added.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who is often accompanied by his mother Irmelin on the red carpet, says he can be called his “mummy’s boy” as he enjoys her presence.

“She just likes to come with me on occasions like this. And when I have the opportunity to take someone with me, I’ll do her the favour. Especially Berlin, she’s got relatives here and loves travelling through Europe. She loves taking part in my life. You can call me a mummy’s boy, but I think it’s cool to have her with me,” femalefirst.com quoted Leonardo as saying.

The “Shutter Island” star also revealed that he is considering taking a career break.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is planning to utilise this year in taking care of himself after his recent movie projects have left him physically and emotionally drained.

The actor is cutting back on his workload after filming serious movies “Shutter Island” and upcoming sci-fi thriller “Inception” took its toll on his wellbeing, reported imdb.com.

DiCaprio, who has been working consistently since he was 17, insists he is excited by the prospect of an empty schedule.

“These last couple of films have taken a lot out of me, so I don’t know what I’m going to do next. This year is going to be the year of really taking care of myself because I’ve reached 35 and I’ve taken a lot of things seriously, maybe too seriously at times, so I’m going to make sure that whatever I do next and whatever choices (I make) are really right for me,” said the actor.

Leonardo DiCaprio has confessed he gets lonely, courtesy the nature of his work that drives him away from home.

The Titanic star revealed he hated being alone that sometimes leaves him feeling like he has been punched in the gut.

“In this business nothing is as dangerous as loneliness. You realise how far you are from leading a normal life. That is quite a punch in the gut,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

The 35-year-old actor donated 1 million dollars to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund to help victims devastated by the massive earthquake that hit the region.
