Pop star Shakira paid a visit to quake-hit Haiti while preparing her plans to develop a school in the devastated nation.

The 33-year-old singer met around a hundred youngsters who were left homeless after the massive quake and have been forced to live in tents in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Shortly after the disaster, the singer announced plans to team her Barefoot Foundation and the Architecture for Humanity charity to build a school in the region, which she hopes will mirror the success of an education facility she launched in her native Colombia.

The institute will provide teaching, nutrition and counselling for kids in need.

“We’ve come to make all the preparations to be able to start the building of a Barefoot school here in Haiti. We think we can employ what we’ve learned (in Colombia) here, apply it in this country which needs it so much at the moment,” aceshowbiz.com quoted her as saying.

“We need to think about the future of this country and of how Haiti’s children can be useful to their societies tomorrow… Education is one of the fundamental tools with which to develop and rebuild Haiti,” she added.

The earthquake in January killed over 300,000 people and left more than a million homeless.

Popular singer Shakira admits that she has become more comfortable with her body and is feeling sexier than ever.

“All through my 20’s I spent more time worrying about what I didn’t have than thinking about what I did have,” dailystar.co.uk quoted Shakira as saying.

“I wished I was taller, had longer legs, slimmer hips, a smaller bottom, even straighter hair. I am just like all women – we’re born to criticise ourselves,” she added.

But, the 33-year-old actress admitted that she has over come all her insecurities and is very happy with the way she looks now.

“Now I am in my 30s I am very happy with who I am. I feel sexier than ever,” said the singer.

Shakira reveals that a lot of hard work has gone behind achieving her figure.

“I have worked my butt off to look like this. I have achieved the body I have now through hard work and careful eating. I have worked out every day, either running, doing gym work or dancing,” explained Shakira.

“I haven’t been on the scales for a year but I know I have made my body leaner, trimming my hips and bottom,” she added.

Popular singer Shakira, who is engaged to lawyer Antonio de la Rua, says she is unable to settle in one place as her work commitments take her all over the world.

“It’s how I live my life, like a nomad. Ever since I became famous, I’m constantly travelling, which is great as I get to see so many different cultures and traditions. But I definitely live like a gypsy!” femalefirst.co.uk quoted her as saying.

Shakira has asked tennis champion Rafael Nadal to star alongside in the video “Gypsy”.

Colombian singer Shakira, who was awarded a medal by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for her work to promote social justice and the advancement of children worldwide, says she has followed Mahatma Gandhi’s maxim.

In her remarks, the singer said Wednesday: “Gandhi used to say ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’ and I’ve followed that maxim.”

Shakira thanked the ILO for the prize and dedicated it to all children suffering from violence and extreme poverty, which is the focus of her Barefoot Foundation.

That non-profit organisation takes its name from the recording artist’s first album and is devoted to ensuring that education is universally available to every child.

Its Colombian partner, the Pies Descalzos Foundation, works to assist vulnerable children affected by population displacement in the Andean nation, providing them with nutritious meals, education and psychological-support services.

Dressed in black high-heeled boots, jeans, a grey T-shirt and a black jacket, Shakira’s dress colours contrasted with the hundreds of red T-shirts worn by children and adults who packed the room where the award ceremony was held.

The T-shirts bore the slogan “Social Justice for Peace” in honour of World Day on Social Justice, which was celebrated Wednesday.

The award was handed out by ILO Director-General Juan Somavia who said: “Your friend (82-year-old Colombian novelist Gabriel) Garcia Marquez maintains that ‘sometimes wisdom comes to us when it can no longer do any good’; that didn’t happen with you.”

Somavia said that “Shakira is an example to follow and an inspiration for all of us.”

“Your youthful wisdom and social consciousness were put to good use very early on. You resolved to be a catalyst for change, to help children escape the grip of poverty through education, to bring back dreams and hope to lives scarred by the trauma of violence and displacement,” he added.

The Colombian responded that she has simply been able to fulfill a dream she has had since she was a young girl: to be able to help the street children of her native Barranquilla who were suffering great hardship and lacked the same privileges she did.

“Investing in a child means investing in our collective future. A child who receives quality education, nutrition and care early in life will have higher earnings, better health, stronger relationships and higher productivity throughout his or her life as an adult,” Shakira said.

She said witnessing extreme poverty as a girl “shaped my dream and my vision of social justice: to see a world where every child can live a dignified life with the opportunity to reap the benefits of a good education and a chance to pursue their dreams”.

Pop singer Shakira met US President Barack Obama to discuss her charity campaign to educate underprivileged kids across the world.

“It was such a privilege to sit down with the president in the Oval Office to discuss our shared commitment to education and early childhood development. We agreed that investing in our children is the smartest strategy governments can use to boost economic growth, fight poverty, and promote global security and peace,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying after the meeting Monday.

“We will be working closely with the president and his staff to implement his vision – for Latinos, children in the United States, and around the world.”

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer, who is an ambassador for Unicef and runs her own charity The Barefoot Foundation, is campaigning to give better education to impoverished children.

She took her campaign to the White House on Monday to speak to Obama about increasing investment in the scheme.

It looks like Shakira’s fiancé is not very comfortable with her sexy image.

The Colombian singer revealed that her lover Antonio de la Rua was shocked when he saw her ‘She Wolf’ video, in which she appears to dance naked inside a cage.

“He did not expect that at all,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

She added: “When he saw me in my flesh-toned leotard bodysuit, he was like ‘Could you not have worn a scarf at least?””

However, the beauty does not plan to lessen the sex quotient in her performances.

She said: “I kept the cage from my She Wolf video. I may use it some other time.”

Also, she performed on The X Factor wearing a figure-hugging black cutaway catsuit which exposed her midriff.
